Chiddingfold travelled to Headley with 14 players for this match to bolster the opposition numbers ensuring there was a game. It also added a little bit more spice to proceedings as some of Chidds big guns went up against each other for the first time in a match. Chiddingfold batted first and were on the receiving end of a Sam Benbough (0-18) bob willis style opening spell with his run up starting near the boundry. However it was the wily spin of Daniel Bennet(1-20) that took the only wicket in the opening 4 overs as he got the better of Gabriel Birkin (10) bowling him out. Jack Roberts (16) struck a couple of 4's and the opening pair managed to put on 28 despite managing to also run themselves out once. Henry Davies (13*) and Joseph Brough (5) added a further 17 with a couple of lusty 4's from Henry. Josh Flenley (8*) and Eddie Walford (2) continued the consistent partnership building adding a further 19 runs with some excellent running between the wickets. Stanley Aldwinckle (10) and Matis Freeman-Lecerf (3) added a further 11 runs without quiet managing to reach the boundary. The entertainment for the spectators came When Chidds last pair Barnaby Davies(10) and Josh Allen (11*) came to the crease, some hyper aggressive running between the wickets including a crazy all run 4 off the last ball, Barnaby Hooking Oliver Harman (0-14) for 4 and Isaac Mcarthy Holland (1-23) for a 1 bounce 4, a sumptuous Josh A cover drive for 4, a partnership of 33, Father giving Barnaby out LBW!! Josh and Barnaby seemingly having a constant conversation with themselves bowlers and fielders all at the same time definitely kept all entertained and allowed Chidd to reach an excellent 208.
The Headley response was kicked off by our very own Isaac Mcarthy Holland (6*) and Oliver Harmon (4) but they were pegged back by very tight bowling from Josh Allen (1-11) and Joseph Brough (0-11) added to a Jack Roberts special direct hit run out and only 12 runs were added by the first pair. The bowling stranglehold continued With Stanley Aldwinckle (0-5) including a maiden and Joshua Flenley (0-8) allowed only 13 runs to be added by the second pair supported by excellent fielding from Chidd. Headleys 3rd Pair added some impetus to their run chase adding 25 runs Barnaby Davies (1-14) and Eddie Walford (0-15) sticking to their task well. The game seemed to be heading for an exciting climax as headleys 4th pair came to the crease but Career best figures for Henry Davies (3-9) and excellent support from Matis Freeman-Lecerf (0-14) a couple of run outs meant Headleys last pair of Sam Benbough and Daniel Bennett would have to score over 60 runs to win the game.
However Daniel Bennett (4) batted with his usual resolve hustling some singles and Sam Benbough (16) started to bring out the big shots as he got his eye in and the pair put on 30 in their first 3 overs, Gabriel Birkin (0-15) relinquished the wicket keeping gloves to bowl conceding just 1 boundary during this onslaught. Could the impossible happen Jack Roberts bowling the last over to Sam Benbough certainly was worried, the fielders were back on the boundary. Jack Roberts (3-17) held his nerve after getting hit for several boundries in his first over he responded by taking 3 wickets in his last ensuring a comfortable win for Chidd.
The fielding throughout was excellent by both sides but what was really great to witness was the banter and camaraderie between all the players particularly between the Chidd players who found themselves on the opposition team. I think it also speaks volumes for the progress Chidd as a junior section has made and the support we get from our parents that we can manage to take 14 players to an away match in Hampshire on a midweek evening, so thank you everyone for your continued suppprt.
